Wholegreen Bakery Sydney CBD

In 2020 we refurbished a Harry Seidler classic interior, on the ground floor of Alliance Française building in Clarence Street, Sydney, as a 100% gluten–free bakery for Wholegreen. The bones of the space were worked with, including the large tapestry artwork and stone finishes. The update worked with the existing palette of travertine, granite and a sculptural staircase to deliver a fresh take —with new chairs, retail display, large timber communal table, leather banquette and new timber joinery added to provide a new warmth that complemented the food and coffee offering. Founded by nutritionist Cherie Lyden, we worked with her team to deliver a new foothold in the city for the growing business. SJS is now working on delivering a wider role out of stores around Sydney in 2025.

Seating for eating

A key element of rethinking the exisitng cafe was to provide a range of seating options that worked within the space, allowing a variety of options for different customers to use the space, from a quick coffee at a high counter, to a large communal table suitable for bigger groups. Warm timber materials and furniture befitting Seidler’s contemporary scale spaces help to humanise the volume, to become a hive of activity of Clarence Street, for building tenants, students and local workers.
